The Columbus East boys soccer team kicked off their regular season Saturday afternoon with a hard-fought 1-0 win over the Whiteland Warriors. The lone goal came midway through the match when Josh VanValkenburg broke free behind the Warrior defense and sent a perfect cross into the box. Ethan Glick was there to finish the play, giving the Olympians the edge they needed to secure the victory. Head Coach Sam Lavelle was pleased with his team’s effort in their first official contest. “The team played really well! Good to get a game under our belts against a tough and physical side. Excited to build off this as we head into three games next week,” Lavelle said. The Olympian junior varsity squad also found success, defeating Whiteland 4-1. Jordan Hofelich netted two goals, while Miguel Ferrer and Joel Smith each added one to round out the scoring. Columbus East will look to carry this momentum forward as they enter a busy stretch of matches next week. The varsity Olympians host East Central High School at the BCSC Soccer Complex on Tuesday, August 16th starting at 7 p.m., followed by a road match at Lawrenceburg H.S. on Thursday, August 21st starting at 7:30 p.m., and then back at the BCSC Soccer Complex when they host Castle H.S. on Saturday, August 23rd starting at 12:30 p.m. Big week ahead for the O's!!!
